Mexico October Weather Overview

October is fall in Mexico, and the last month of the rainy season (which begins in May). If you visit in the beginning or middle of October, you will likely experience some rain during your trip, but you might have less of it toward the end of the month. Either way, humidity will still be somewhat high, especially in the coastal areas.

Weather in Mexico in October can be unpredictable, with the possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, tropical storms, and hurricanes. If you travel here then, it’s a good idea to get travel insurance.

But in many parts of the country, milder temperatures make for a pleasant time to be outdoors whenever the rain stops. You will also find more affordable prices and fewer crowds during October, since it’s part of the low season.

If you’re concerned about rain or storms messing up your trip, however, consider going a bit later in the fall. The weather in Mexico in November is drier but still warm, with lower humidity. November 1 also marks the official end of the hurricane season.

Best Places to Visit in Mexico in October

Since October is part of the low season, you’ll find lower prices and fewer tourists throughout the country. This makes many of the most popular resort towns in Mexico easier and more pleasant to visit, even with the possibility of rain.

October can be a great time to visit Mexico City, as the milder temperatures ranging from 48°F to 75°F (9°C to 24°C) make it easier to walk around and explore the vibrant city and historic sites.

Other top towns like Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, and Merida are good during this month as well. Merida is still quite warm, with highs up into the low 90s.

Cancun is also one of the best places to visit in Mexico in October, with temperatures that are still warm but not as hot as during the summer (75-88°F, or 24-31°C). When the sun is out, this makes for good beach weather (although it’s still pretty humid).

Other top tourist destinations along the coast such as Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel are also great to visit during this month as long as you don’t mind the chance of rainy days.

Pacific Coast destinations like Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta are definitely some of the best places to visit in Mexico in October, as the weather is still quite warm so you can enjoy outdoor activities but it’s not as hot as in the summer. Also, remember that it’s likely to be sunny in Los Cabos during October, since that area’s rainy season ends in September.

Is October a good time to go to Cancun?

As discussed above, Cancun October weather is still fairly hot, with temperatures in the high 80s and a relatively high humidity level of around 77%. Also, the high season crowds are gone and prices are lower.

This makes October a pretty good time to go to Cancun, although you do have the possibility of rain and storms. However, most rain will be afternoon thunderstorms that pass quickly. If you want to keep this risk as low as possible, schedule your trip toward the end of the month. And if you want to avoid it altogether, or would like the weather to be a little less hot, consider going in November to January.
